The first memory I have of art being something important to me was winning a first place certificate in a primary school art exhibition. I was 9 years old and I don't remember the work, just the feeling of being pleased with my work prior to the award. I do remember standing in the school hall being very surprised that I had won and that others had obviously liked it too. It changed my consciousness about my ability and made me want to improve, to achieve more and to prove again that they hadn't made a mistake. And so followed years of creating in one way or another.
In the 1970's and 80's I took art at Rodney College with Sharley Haddon and then Epsom Girls Grammar in my final year under the tutelage of the sculptor Marte Szirmay. Her influence was huge and I walked away with an A bursary and entrance into Elam Art School at Auckland University.
Life intervened and I completed my Fine Arts degree years later after re-entering tertiary education with AUT. My major was painting.
